Competency Assessment

Competency assessment for observable behaviour

what it is

Competency Assessment -What it is and how it works?

A competency assessment normally consists of work-related behaviour observed by a trained professional.

Behaviour is assessed by using a competency framework, comprising a list of competencies, each with its own Behaviourally Anchored Rating Scale (BARS) that allows the systematic and standardised evaluation of behaviour.

In the field of psychology and behaviour analysis, competency tests are, historically, derived from the Assessment Centre tradition, and consist of work-related simulations such as in-baskets, role plays, group exercises, and presentations. To have value, these exercises should be well-designed and tested, while observers should be thoroughly trained in using the available BARS.

At Competence SA, we provide clients and their users with a wide range of options – international, local and proprietary work-related simulations, mostly focused on leadership assessment – for selection, leadership training or succession planning.

Our Competency Assessment Solutions

Competency assessments are often known as ‘soft skills’.

They often complement psychometric testing, as they provide a work-related context and allow a more comprehensive evaluation of an individual.

Competency assessments can be used in selection, or when identifying training and development needs. It can also be of use when identifying leadership potential and doing succession planning.

It is more often used in managerial roles, where a degree of work experience is assumed and when competence in managing others is required.
